Buffalo's Back Yard: Photography Pop Up Show

What are you doing for this coming First Friday? If you're taking in all the art opening then add the Buffalo's Back Yard: Photography Pop Up show to your list. It features 100 photos from my Mile by Mile: Buffalo running project from 2016. It is a one-night only event on Friday, September 7, 2018, 6 pm to 10 pm, at the Lyth Cottage, 16 Harwood Place.

There will be 11 other photographers pointing their lens toward the hidden, the private, and the seldom seen of Buffalo. Scott Balzer, Dan Cogliano, Matthew Christopher, Chris Hawley, Ed Healy, Molly Jarboe, Christina Laing, Nancy J. Parisi, Mike Puma, Daniel Seiders, and David Torke are the participating photographers.

The first thing you will notice when in my photos is the fact that nearly all of them would be the literal front yards from homes. While this is a contradiction, the show implies the "Back Yard" concept in the idea that places your everyday routes do not normally take you down. This is essentially the theme of the my TEDxBuffalo Talk in 2016. Once we begin to figure the "best" way to move around a city then we essentially turn off, stop exploring, or put blinders on. We lose our sense of discovering a place. The question I ask today is whether we are actually trying to discover a place or just merely try to get around?
